Thermal underwear

The weather turned cold here.
Well, for southern California it's cold.
Just a couple miles up the hill, our friend
reported 29F mid morning.

A dozen(?) years ago I bought Damart
thermal underwear. I'm wearing a single
force top under a sweatshirt right now.
Whatever the material is, ...
it's amazing stuff. BUT I don't know
where to get Damart these days.

Does anyone know if thermal underwear
that is made of the same material is
available in the USA?

Note: I wore other "thermal" underwear
before discovering Damart. Thermolactyl
or whatever they called the material, is by
far best, so far, so it is my benchmark.
But maybe there is something same/similar
or even better out there now?

Re: Thermal underwear

Well, I see that Damart is still in business.
But it is apparently only for UK folks now.
And I don't see any mention of Thermolactyl.
Furthermore, I don't see any double weight
turtleneck tops. :frown:

Okay, I found thermolactyl, but still no
turtleneck, and I would still have to order
from UK.

Re: Thermal underwear

Sam,
Try SILK long underwear. Silk is the fabric of the centuries. The Chinese learned this more than two thousand years ago.

I still have the pair I purchased more than twenty five years ago. GREAT for skiing, snow shoeing, and any other outdoors or cold weather activities.

AND you can find them at most of the better ski shops. Or outdoor shops.

LL Bean also carries them. http://www.llbean.com/webapp/wcs/sto...Go.x=10&Go.y=8

$32 for the pants and either $32 or $35 for the shirt...

Re: Thermal underwear

We used to get damart long underwear. Used to wear it playing those cold November HS football games. The stuff rocked, with one small exception:

Put it in the drier and your nice thermal underwear shirt gets reduced to a hand puppet.

(apologies to Seinfeld)

Has that changed?

The really funny thing is, if it's 29 there, we are much warmer than that here in the Northeast.

RM-

LOL thanks!

LG-

Thanks for reminding me
about washing/drying Damart.

29F is rare for midmorning, but
that was up the road a few miles.

52F on my thermometer now.

Re: Thermal underwear

29F?

I don't even want to talk to you guys. We MIGHT have a high of 30F today. Yesterday's high was about 15F with a low right around 0F...

Plus we got about six inches of snow. But I ain't bitchin...

I talked to a guy in Great Falls, MT yesterday and about lunch time MST, he was -5F with a wind chill of about -20F. And it was daytime. Nighttime was WAY colder. And he said they had 18 inches and it was still snowing.

So, I guess it's all relative. Or is that it's all about when the relatives show up... er.... NEVER MIND.:Zzzz:

Re: Thermal underwear

It's 28F here, but it's Dallas! It was 75F yesterday.

I second the silk thermal recommendation. Comfortable, warm, and wears like iron if you treat it right. (I was born in upstate NY so I know cold).

Re: Thermal underwear

wool is excellent too, we're using it for our baby daughter in the frozen north of europe (although it's actually record-breakingly warm at the moment). sounds like silk is better, though, and not too expensive, will check that out (can you guys beat -40C??)

wallew 12-01-2006 11:56 AM

Re: Thermal underwear

-40f? Yeah, my brother lives in Anchorage and they would KILL for -40F during the dead of winter when they see the sun on the horizon for about three or four hours a day.

It doesn't actually rise, just travels along below the horizon. Kind of like a two hour sunrise that goes into a two hour sunset. But the sun never actually breaks the horizon.

And the temps in Anchorage can get well below -40F. Add in wind chill and I've had conversations with them where they hit -80F to -100F.

Too cold for me. But I'm just a woosie.

Re: Thermal underwear

Hey wallew-

A friend who went to Alaska to work for
oil explorers swore that his piss would
freeze before it hit the ground.

Is it possible?

wallew 12-01-2006 12:32 PM

Re: Thermal underwear

Sam,
OIL WILL FREEZE in the open air. If you don't have a block warmer AND a garage to park in, you pretty much stay at home. Cause the oil in your engine is frozen solid.

While I hadn't heard about piss freezing before it hit the ground, it is certainly within the realm of possibility. And think about that for a second. A liquid, that when introduced to the cold of the outside is 98 degrees, drops to well below freezing in the milliseconds before it hits the ground.

Again, too cold for me...

Re: Thermal underwear

I just played with my digital stopwatch.
I estimate the time in air to be in the
neighborhood of 1/3 second.

Re: Thermal underwear

Sam,

I was gonna tell you bout the USA Damart Store. You can request a catalog or order online. My DAd just got his catalog for 2007, been getting Damart stuff for years. My self, I am partial to anything that is poly propylene. It is such a great material that I can where it when it is below 20 in the mornings and still have it on in the 40s and 50s and not be all hot and sweat. Air dries very quickly. I wear it Rafting the Gauley River in October, even wet it stays warm.

Re: Thermal underwear

teedub31-

Thanks, I'm gonna get a set of silk, and
a new set of Damart. I'll bet there will be
times when one type is more appropriate
than the other.

Re: Thermal underwear

A related topic-

We rarely run the house heater during the day,
and never at night. We leave a window open,
even in winter, if just an inch or two. It can
get down to the fortys in our bedroom while
we sleep.

What we have found is that two cheap
Costco down comforters keep us just
as warm or warmer than one expensive
comforter that costs more than the two
cheap ones combined. Plus it is easy to
adjust warmth level by tossing one layer
off.
